What to Do in Ipoh | Explore Caves & Shop on Concubine Lane

Once travelers discover what to do in Ipoh, the two-hour drive from either metropolis seems like a skip in the park! Gunung Lang Recreational Park

When a city has a recreation park with a mountain peak, lake and waterfall near the center of town, taking a hike there seems like a no-brainer. Gunung Lang Recreational Park sits just a couple miles (5 kilometers) north of Ipoh Old Town and contains all adventurists need for a fun-filled day. One of the main features of the park is its limestone hills and cliffs, which are perfect for rock climbing. Other activities at Gunung Lang Recreational Park include canoeing, fishing, spelunking and camping.

 

 

Explore Street Art & Murals

A copycat but less-busy (and therefore more enjoyable) adaptation of Penang’s famous street art murals, Ipoh’s street art murals fill two lanes with interactive art. Seven of the murals were drawn by renowned artist Ernest Zacharevic, who famously livened up several streets in Penang. Others were created by local artists. Tourists can stop by the Ipoh Tourist Information Center in Old Town to grab a brochure and learn more about the street art scene in Ipoh. Those who just want to wing it and wander around Ipoh on their own will find Zacarevic’s seven (formerly eight) original works at Market Lane and Jalan Bijeh Timah. New works are a 5-minute walk away in Mural Art’s Lane on Jalan Masjid.

 

 

Visit Cave Temples

Even travelers squeamish of spelunking will enjoy touring Ipoh’s most popular cave temples. Built into limestone hills, these temples are equipped with walking paths and sturdy handrails that take the pressure off exploration. They also are located within minutes of each other, and there are even more cave temples nearby!

 

 

Tour Ipoh Museums

One of the best things about sightseeing in Ipoh is that many museums and things to do are located in city center, which is totally walkable. These three museums are just minutes apart and are situated between several other landmarks and places to visit in downtown Ipoh.

 

Concubine Lane

Some say Concubine Lane was built to house the wives and concubines of mining bigwig Yao Tet Shin. Others say wealthy men used to put up their mistresses in the dainty apartments. While the legends and secrets behind this quaint walking street are many, one fact is indisputable: Concubine Lane remains one of Ipoh’s most beloved attractions today. Guests are welcome to wander … and wonder … down the street to browse former apartments that have been transformed into local boutiques, dessert and candy stores and trendy cafes. Visitors who want to enjoy the lane with fewer people should go on a weekday. On weekends, Concubine Lane buzzes with tourists and locals.
